Faeto

There are two main peculiarities of this little jewel. The first is to be, together with the adjacent town of Celle San Vito, the only Franco-Provençal linguistic island of Puglia. The other symbol of the village is the forest that surrounds it. These two elements make Faeto a unique place, where culture, nature, history and tradition come together to create a unique harmony, absolutely to be discovered.

About the village

The small village of Faeto (less than 700 inhabitants) is situated on the magnificent mountains of Daunia, on a hill from which you can admire at a glance all the Tavoliere delle Puglie, the Gargano Peninsula and the Gulf of Manfredonia. Two are the main peculiarities of this little jewel. The first is that of being, together with the adjoining village of Celle San Vito, the only linguistic island francoprovenzale in Puglia (the term Faeto derives precisely from the corresponding Faìte).

The other symbol of the village is the forest that surrounds him (Faìte means 'faggeto', beech woods). The Difesa Forest of Faeto is one of the most important forests of Daunia and is mainly formed by oaks and (precisely) beech trees. These two elements make Faeto a unique place where culture, nature, history and tradition blend to create a unique harmony, absolutely to discover. The village maintains intact its medieval charm, epoch in which we have the first news on its existence (half of the XII century). A maze of streets, narrow alleys and tortuous streets, which start from the main church, meander toward the outskirts of the village, giving life to a path along which you will meet the famous arches (lo cunnùtte), the suggestive portals of the village. Famous in this territory are the spontaneous springs of mineral water, with organoleptic qualities that make it curative and diuretic. In correspondence of the sources were built numerous fountains which often bear the name of the source from which they draw. Only its doscovery can be magical: some are located inside and outside the village, other immersed in the forest, inside which you can also find the remains of ancient water mills. Other renowned excellence of Faeto is his DOP ham and all other derived from black pig (autochthonous breed), worked with ancient methods: a real culinary tradition. Each year to this product is dedicated two important festivals: Ham Festival is held every year in August, in the forest of Faeto; Pork Festival, instead, the first Sunday of February. Here you can discover the flavors and the most representative pleasures of Faeto, that are not limited to ham, but also to the sausage, the soppressata, the capocollo, the fillet and the bacon. All of them of great quality, products from local farmers.
