Situated on the slopes of the hill of the same name that reaches 881 meters above sea level, the village of Cellena represents the main relief of the entire municipal territory of Semproniano. From its top, the view embraces its entire panorama, from the Fiora Valley to Mount Civitella overlooking Selvena. Turning your gaze, you can admire the natural wonders of Mount Amiata and Mount Labbro, and on the opposite side, the extension of Mount Civitella to the territory of Pitigliano. It is located only 5 km from Semproniano.
Cellena è consists of several settlements, including Case Leoni, Case Perugini, Case Petrini, Casa Lazzeri and Casa Giuli, all located along the Provincial Road or a short distance from it. Its origins date back to the year 888, and its name seems to suggest that it originated as a cell of the Abbey of San Salvatore on Mount Amiata. As an early rural settlement, it was part of the jurisdiction of Cortevecchia, mentioned in 1276-77 with the Ecclesia Sante Marie de Castroveteri. Since 1787, by decision of Bishop Pius Santi, the parish of Cortevecchia was transferred to Cellena.
In this charming hamlet is the Church of the Santissima Annunziata, consecrated on October 4, 1958. Inside you can visit two small chapels dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua and the Sacred Heart of Jesusù.
