Petricci

The village of Petricci has recent origins, although the historical roots of the territory over which it presides date back to the 9th century AD. At the end of the 18th century, the small settlement, consisting only of a hamlet and a private chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, was chosen because it was the only place of worship in the territory and insisted on the main road of communication that led from Amiata to Maremma.
In the center of the village we find the Church of St. Joseph, squeezed between two small streets that, continuing then their path, lead, on the right to the cemetery and on the left to the contrada Caese.

The Bell Tower, which is the emblematic element of Petricci, rises to a height of 25 meters. With the public clock it houses three bells, two of which were cast in 1881, dedicated to St. Joseph and Our Lady of Grace, and the third dedicated to St. Mamiliano and St. Gregory VII. An alabaster head of unknown origin was walled under the south-facing cornice of the primitive bell tower. The mystery surrounding it has led the village’s collective imagination to nickname it the “Guardian of Petricci”.

The scattered hamlets answer to the names of: Poggio, Cà di Rossi, Casone, Calizzano, Cà di Ragno, Caese, Acquaiana, Paiccia, Boschetto, Cà di Vido, Marruchina and Belvedere.
The most ancient center è Calizzano, which had in its territory a castle and two churches (of San Giusto which had a Convent attached, and the Church of San Leonardo).
