In the heart of Trentino, amongst neat rows of vines, charming villages and mountains that frame the landscape, the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg is home to a remarkable cultural heritage. Alongside its culinary and wine specialities and nature trails, the area offers places that tell the story of centuries of history, ancient traditions and the lives of the communities that call it home.

Amongst castles, churches, historic palaces and museums, two attractions stand out as key destinations for those wishing to discover the destination’s most authentic spirit: the Giardino dei Ciucioi in Lavis and the METS – San Michele Trentino Ethnographic Museum, the only cultural sites open to visitors all year round.

The Ciucioi Garden: Tommaso Bortolotti’s visionary dream

Just a short walk from the historic centre of Lavis lies one of the most fascinating and unusual places in Trentino: the Giardino dei Ciucioi.

Created in the second half of the nineteenth century by the entrepreneur Tommaso Bortolotti, this extraordinary hanging garden is the result of a romantic vision that combines architecture, botany and imagination. As visitors stroll along the picturesque path winding through terraces, stairways, historic greenhouses, loggias, artificial grottoes and spectacular façades, they are taken on a journey out of time.

Each level offers different views of the valley and bears witness to the ambition of its creator, who transformed a rocky slope into a place capable of hosting plant species from all over the world. Even today, the Garden retains a sense of being suspended in time, characterised by romantic vistas and architectural details that make it one of the most original cultural attractions in the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg.

METS – San Michele Ethnographic Museum of Trentino: the living memory of the region

To truly understand the bond between the people and this region, a visit to METS – San Michele Trentino Ethnographic Museum is an unmissable stop.

Housed within the ancient Augustinian monastery of San Michele all’Adige, the museum is regarded as one of Italy’s most important ethnographic museums. The exhibition takes visitors through reconstructed settings, original artefacts, historical accounts and installations that illustrate the daily life of Alpine communities.

From farming activities to traditional crafts, from wine production to folk traditions, each room offers an insight into how people once lived in the Trentino valleys and how this knowledge has helped shape the region’s cultural identity.

It is not merely a matter of observing ancient tools or historical settings, but of understanding the deep relationship between people, the landscape and nature that still characterises the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg today.

A cultural heritage spread across villages, castles and monuments

The cultural heritage of the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg extends far beyond its museums. Strolling through the villages, you will come across centuries-old churches, elegant historic palaces, castles and works of art that tell the story of a region that has always been a crossroads of trade, cultures and peoples.

Among the most significant sites is the Monreale Castle, which towers over the hill of Faedo. For centuries, this fortress controlled the Piana Rotaliana and the ancient border between Tyrol and the Bishopric of Trento. Today, visitors can admire its imposing hexagonal tower and crenellated walls from the outside – the last remaining traces of its long history – whilst the interior is open to the public only on special occasions and during dedicated events.

The Church of Saints Philip and James, known as the church of Zambana Vecchia, is also well worth a visit. This building stands as one of the most poignant reminders of the area’s history: it is, in fact, the only building to have survived the 1954 landslide that completely destroyed the ancient village of Zambana. Today, the church retains its historical and symbolic value intact, serving as a place of contemplation and collective memory.

Every village also boasts charming views, where the architecture blends with the landscape and history comes to life amongst squares, narrow streets and ancient buildings. Throughout the year, exhibitions, guided tours, cultural events and dedicated initiatives allow visitors to experience this heritage in an engaging way, offering new opportunities to discover the identity of the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg.

Culture, the local area and identity: an experience to be enjoyed all year round

Visiting the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg means going beyond simply discovering its famous vineyards and culinary delights. It means immersing oneself in a region that proudly preserves its heritage and brings it to life through places that stir the emotions and tell a story.

The Giardino dei Ciucioi and the METS offer two complementary experiences: the former surprises visitors with its romantic and visionary beauty, whilst the latter guides them on a journey to discover the deepest roots of Trentino’s culture. Together, they form the ideal starting point for exploring a region that continues to celebrate its historical, artistic and human heritage, transforming every visit into an authentic journey through the culture of Trentino.
