Catabbio

Catabbio è a charming hamlet nestled among the rolling hills of the Grosseto Maremma, in the heart of Italy. This hamlet of Semproniano è strategically located between the valleys of the Albegna and Fiora hills, representing a stronghold in the hilly hinterland of Tuscany. Located about 5 km southeast of the center of the municipal capital, Catabbio è near a crossroads that leads on one side to Pitigliano and on the other to Manciano.

Catabbio consists of eight ancient hamlets: Santarello, Casa Rigo, Verziliani, Acquamara, Scalabrelli, Casa Zammarchi, Casa Iaconi and Monti. The Latin place-name, Catabulum, suggests the presence of a place reserved for cattle breeding, further confirmation of the charming ruralityà of the village.

.

In the distant past, the first settlement is said to have originated on a scenic knoll known as Catabbiaccio, which is said to have housed a Roman settlement, an Aldobrandesque castle, and finally an episcopal villa. According to local legend, Catabbiaccio had the honor of hosting Ildebrando di Soana, who later became Pope Gregory VII.

The modern village of Catabbio centers its social life around the hamlet of Santarello, where the Church of St. Anne stands out. Another notable church è the Church of Santa Lucia, located in the village of Scalabrelli, which was an important hub for the liturgical celebrations of the bishops of Sovana during their stays in the nearby villa of Catabbiaccio.

Continuing along the road from Scalabrelli, one reaches Case Zammarchi, where the picturesque Chapel of the Assumption is located, along with a Monte Pio that was responsible for distributing grain to local families in need.

Catabbio is distinguished by its inhabitants’ special veneration of St. Blaise, whose statue è is kept inside the Church of Santa Lucia. The feast of the saint, celebrated on the evening of Feb. 3, è is still the subject of traditional celebrations in the village, culminating in the preparation of “migliacci,” special local crepe. These customs show how fond the people of Catabbio are of their roots and the traditions of the past.

All in all, Catabbio è a place of great charm, encompassing centuries of history and culture. A perfect destination for those who want to immerse themselves in an incredible travel experience among the wonders of the most authentic Tuscany.
