The Parish Church of St John the Baptist in Semproniano is a relatively recent religious building, yet one that is deeply rooted in the historical and spiritual heritage of the local area.
Inaugurated on 27 April 1969, the church has a simple, linear structure: a long, rectangular building of modest height, whose distinctive feature is the central lantern tower, surmounted by the belfry, which lends the entire complex a sense of height and makes it instantly recognisable. Access is via two flights of steps leading into the interior.
The nave is laid out in a basilica-style plan with three aisles, divided by two columns and two reinforced concrete piers on each side. The interior architecture, simple yet harmonious, is enhanced by the natural light filtering through twenty-four cross-shaped windows: twelve larger ones situated in the lantern tower and twelve smaller ones along the perimeter walls. The floor, laid with marble slabs, contributes to the sobriety and elegance of the liturgical space.
Despite its modern construction, the church retains a strong link to the past: historical studies have confirmed that the first parish church of Semproniano was dedicated to St John the Baptist. This makes the current building not only a contemporary place of worship, but also the symbolic heir to a religious tradition that has its roots stretching back centuries.
Today, the church serves as a focal point for the community, uniting modern architecture and historical memory into a single identity.
