Sperlonga says no to disposable plastic

Sperlonga says no to plastic and does so in view of a summer dedicated to the fight against pollution. Precisely in the week following World Climate Day, “the pearl of the Tyrrhenian” also officially opposes the use of organic material that causes the greatest damage to the environment. The mayor Armando Cusani, in fact, has signed an ordinance that forbids the use of no-biodegradable envelopes in commercial establishments and foodstuffs.

Bars, restaurants, pizzerias, hotels. But also bathing establishments, campsites and holiday homes: an entire tourist sector operating in Sperlonga will have to guarantee to customers arriving next summer dishes, glasses, cutlery, straws and bottles, all strictly composed of compostable material. Those who go shopping in supermarkets can only use paper bags or cloth bags. And, since the administration must set a good example, during the sessions of the city council the water must be served in a carafe and served in paper or glass cups.

The provision, which will come into force on May 1st, aims to protect the sea and the splendid beach of Sperlonga, which is too often the victim of disrespectful behavior by some swimmers who leave plastic packages or bottles on the sand. Those who break the ban will be punished with fines ranging from 25 to 500 euros.

«The abandonment of plastic waste – claims the mayor of Sperlonga – not only damages the environment but creates economic damage, in addition to tourism, also to the fishing and navigation sectors».

We hope that other Italian municipalities will also imitate the ecological example of Sperlonga: the environment must be protected starting from our daily habits.
