The Church of San Pietro in Avigliana stands in a secluded spot, connected to the village of the same name by a picturesque flight of steps, and is surrounded by the ancient cemetery. The building has very ancient origins and in 1205 passed from the jurisdiction of the provostry of Oulx to that of the Moncenisio hospice, an important landmark for pilgrims and travellers crossing the Alps.
The interior of the church is particularly interesting for its rich fresco decoration, the result of various artistic layers dating from the 11th to the 17th century. In the apse basin are the figures of the Apostles and Christ in a mandorla, repainted between 1348 and 1362 by the so-called Master of Tommaso d’Acaia, the prelate who commissioned the pictorial cycle. In the right-hand apse, meanwhile, the Alessandrian painter Giacomo Pitterio worked at the end of the 14th century.
