Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Borgo Vecchio

already in the XII century it is mentioned as a dependency of the Prevostura San Lorenzo d’Oulx. The church has suffered in the course of the centuries numerous restorations and it is today with a garment of the baroque. Of the original Romanesque complex remains only the base of the bell tower, republished in gothic key in the course of the XV century with the application of decorations with basins of enamelled ceramics.

As mentioned, the interior has undergone profound changes starting from the XV century and there is now a single nave with side chapels (built in the XIX century), the presbytery and choir polygonal. Among the antique furnishings preserved in the church there are cited the eighteenth century pulpit, coming from the former convent of S. Augustine and the baroque paintings depicting the Stories of the Old Testament and the Annunciation, while dates back to 1926 the canvas of John Paul Crida depicting the Blessed Umberto of Savoy. The church served as parish until 1974, year in which the cult was transferred to the new church of Santa Maria Maggiore, situated in borgo low of Avigliana, near the railway station.

Currently the church is the seat of the Cultural Center Life and Peace, which has promoted the work of restoration and archaeological investigations, and houses a permanent collection of sculptures in bronze and plaster of the artist Elsa Veglio Turino (1921-1986). Among the works forming part of the collection stand out the Crucifixion and the Christ emptied, of intense expressiveness.
