Piazza dei Caduti is one of the most significant squares in Casalvecchio Siculo and is situated opposite the town hall, the administrative heart of the village. This place serves as a focal point for the community’s collective memory, dedicated to the memory of the citizens of Casalvecchio Siculo who lost their lives in the conflicts of the 20th century.
At the centre of the square stands the war memorial, a contemporary work by the sculptor Antonino Ucchino. The sculpture, made of stainless steel and standing approximately four and a half metres tall, features a pyramidal structure that gives the whole a striking visual impact. The monument is characterised by two contrasting symbolic images that convey the tragedy of war and the desire for peace.
At the top stands a figure representing the ideals of freedom and justice, a symbol of humanity’s highest aspirations and the hope for a better world. At the base, however, is a figure evoking the violence endured and the loss of human dignity, recalling the suffering and tragedies caused by conflict.
Next to the monument are commemorative plaques engraved with the names of the citizens of Casalvecchio Siculo who fell in various wars. These inscriptions make the site not only an urban space but also a civic memorial, where the memory of individuals merges with the collective history of the town.
Piazza dei Caduti is now a place for gathering and reflection, the setting for official commemorations and ceremonies dedicated to remembrance. Here, between the town hall and the monument, the community renews its remembrance of its fellow citizens and the universal value of peace.
