Church of the Annunciation

Church of the Annunciation

Located in the upper part of Casalvecchio Siculo, the Church of the Annunciation is one of the most significant places of worship in the village, an example of Sicilian Baroque religious architecture. Built in the 16th century, it has a single nave, embellished with four side altars and a high altar that houses the chapel with the sculptural group of the Annunciation.

The wooden simulacrum of the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel, created in 1742 by the Neapolitan sculptor Francesco De Nardo, is the most precious work housed inside the church. The composition, in the Neapolitan style, expresses grace and balance, with careful rendering of the faces and drapery that lend solemnity and sweetness to the sacred scene.

Until the early 19th century, the church was entrusted to the Basilian monks who resided at the nearby Church of Saints Peter and Paul of Agrò. With the suppression of religious orders during the Napoleonic era, the monks left the village and management passed to the Confraternity of the Annunciation, established in 1740, which still today represents an important reference point for local religious life.

The interior preserves 17th-century stucco decorations that enrich the walls and altars, creating a cosy and harmonious atmosphere. It houses two paintings from the local school dating back to the 17th century, albeit damaged by time, and a more recent painting. The church also venerates Saint Anthony the Abbot, depicted in a valuable painting showing him giving his blessing, with an open book in his left hand, symbolising wisdom and faith.

The Church of the Annunciation is thus a fundamental part of the historical and artistic heritage of Casalvecchio Siculo, a place where art, devotion and community memory intertwine in a silent and evocative atmosphere.
