Caskets of history and beauty: The enchantment of the Castiglioni Museum and Villa Panza
The Castiglioni Museum, located in the picturesque Villa Toeplitz Park, is a veritable treasure chest of ethnological and archaeological treasures, the result of more than sixty years of tireless efforts by twin brothers Alfredo and Angelo Castiglioni. Through their missions to different regions of Africa, the Castiglionis have collected thousands of artifacts attesting to the material and spiritual traditions of numerous ethnic groups, including the Paleonegritic peoples of North Cameroon and the Nilo-Camitic people of the upper White Nile. Each room of the museum tells a story, from Tuareg culture to ancient graffiti to countless tools, weapons, and ornaments, objects that speak of a distant and often forgotten world.
Not just an exhibition venue, the Castiglioni Museum also serves as a meeting place for families and young visitors, offering educational workshops and interactive paths that stimulate curiosity and learning. The Castiglioni’s vision, inspired by the words of Senegalese poet Léopold Sédar Senghor, reflects a deep respect for the cultures studied and the value of historical memory, making the museum an important cultural institution capable of echoing the voices of those who would otherwise be forgotten.
Another jewel of the province is Villa Panza, a prestigious example of an 18th-century mansion that combines architectural magnificence with an exceptional artistic heritage. Built by Marquis Paolo Antonio Menafoglio on a scenic hill, the villa was enlarged and renovated by noted 19th- and 20th-century architects such as Luigi Canonica and Piero Portaluppi. In the 1950s, Count Giuseppe Panza embarked on an ambitious collecting project, bringing together more than 200 works of contemporary art exploring the themes of light and color, sacred and in perfect harmony with historic furnishings and collections of African and pre-Columbian art. Opened to the public and donated to FAI in 1996, Villa Panza is not only a temple of contemporary art, but also a place of discovery and interaction, where the 33,000-square-meter garden invites sensory enjoyment of art, making it accessible to all generations.

Finally, the Morandini Foundation is a cultural institution that came to life in 2016 thanks to the far-sighted vision of artist Marcello Morandini and the generous support of two passionate collectors, with the aim of creating an open, accessible and inclusive exhibition space dedicated to the master’s art. The Foundation’s exhibition proposal is not limited to local boundaries, but opens to a national and international audience, attracting critics, curators, artists and art collectors. The Foundation goes to great lengths to stimulate the curiosity of the general public as well, offering a fascinating journey through Morandini’s works and research, traceable to his exploration of themes of movement in space. His production, which ranges from design to installation art, is characterized by a geometric language that intersects two- and three-dimensionality, supported by a mathematical foundation.
