Nestled on a sunny natural terrace above Merano, Scena is one of South Tyrol’s most popular destinations for those who love walking amidst nature. During the summer, the village becomes a perfect starting point for hikes of all levels, taking in vineyards, apple orchards, shady woods, ancient farmsteads and views stretching from the peaks of the Sarntal Alps to the Merano basin.

With almost 500 kilometres of signposted trails spread across various altitudes, Scena offers an incredible variety of routes that cater to both families seeking relaxing strolls and more experienced hikers keen to reach panoramic peaks. The irrigation channel paths: walking along the watercourse

Among the most evocative summer experiences in Scena are undoubtedly the walks along the famous Waalwege, the ancient irrigation channels. These routes follow the irrigation channels built centuries ago to bring water to the fields and vineyards situated on the driest slopes of the valley.

The Scena Irrigation Channel Trail takes walkers through chestnut groves, woods and apple orchards, offering constant views of the Merano Valley. The route is almost entirely flat and is perfect for summer days thanks to its many shaded areas. The gentle flow of the water creates a relaxing atmosphere, making this walk one of the most popular with both locals and visitors.

The Maia Irrigation Channel Trail is also a splendid alternative. Crossing meadows, woods and orchards along the course of the Passirio River, it leads to Saltusio and allows you to immerse yourself in nature without facing any significant elevation changes. It is no coincidence that these trails are particularly popular with families and those wishing to enjoy the landscape in peace.

The Sentiero dei Prati: a journey through history, art and stunning views

Anyone wishing to combine outdoor activities with exploring the local cultural heritage should not miss the Wiesenweg, the famous Meadow Trail.

This route passes through some of Scena’s most significant sites, offering a wonderful insight into the history of the area. Along the route, you’ll encounter Scena Castle, an elegant residence housing precious historical collections; the Mausoleum of Archduke John of Austria and his wife Anna Plochl; the Church of St Martin, considered one of South Tyrol’s most fascinating Romanesque monuments; and the charming Round Church of St George with its medieval frescoes.

The whole route is framed by flower-filled meadows, vineyards and vantage points offering views of the surrounding mountains. In spring and early summer, when the apple orchards are in bloom or laden with fruit, the route takes on an even more special charm.

The Sentiero dei Masi: the authentic mountains of South Tyrol

For those wishing to discover the true essence of the South Tyrolean mountains, the Farm Trail is one of the most fascinating hikes.

The route winds through the Montescena area, linking ancient farmsteads that have shaped the mountainous agricultural landscape for centuries. Walking through meadows, pastures and historic farms, you have the opportunity to gain a first-hand insight into rural life in South Tyrol, which remains deeply rooted in tradition.

The view of the Merano area accompanies you for much of the walk, offering alternating glimpses of green valleys, woods and Alpine peaks. The peaceful atmosphere and direct contact with rural culture make this hike particularly popular with those seeking authentic experiences away from the more crowded trails.

The Path of Legends: an adventure for the whole family

One of the most unique walks in Scena is the Path of Legends, a route that captivates both adults and children alike.

Along the path, which winds through meadows and woods between the Thurnerhof and Scena Castle, you’ll come across wooden sculptures depicting characters from ancient local legends. Fairies, spirits, devils and mysterious creatures populate the trail, accompanied by information boards recounting the stories handed down through folk tradition.

The woodland setting, the silence broken only by birdsong, and the artistic works carved from wood transform this simple walk into a true storytelling experience in the open air, perfect for engaging children and sparking their imagination.

From the vineyard to the summit: stunning scenic hikes

For experienced hikers, Scena offers a prime starting point for exploring some of South Tyrol’s most spectacular landscapes.

Thanks to the Verdins and Saltusio cable cars, it is easy to reach the Monte Hirzer hiking area, one of the largest and most scenic in the region. Here, a network of trails connects mountain huts, refuges and high-altitude pastures, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Those seeking a more demanding challenge can tackle the ascent to the Hirzer Peak, which, at 2,781 metres, is the highest peak in the Sarntal Alps. From the summit, you can enjoy an extraordinary panorama that takes in much of South Tyrol.

The Merano 2000 plateau is also an ideal destination for summer hikes. Its wide, scenic trails allow you to walk amidst a spectacular alpine landscape, characterised by green meadows, mountain huts and views that look like something out of a postcard.

From Scena to Merano on foot, through vineyards and apple orchards

One of the most pleasant walks is the route linking Scena to Merano via the Mitterplattweg scenic trail.

In about an hour’s walk, you pass through vineyards, apple orchards and old farmsteads, accompanied by constant views of the valley. The route allows you to reach the historic centre of Merano easily without using a car, making the journey itself an integral part of the travel experience.

Along the way, you can clearly sense the blend of Alpine and Mediterranean environments that characterises the Merano area, one of the most fascinating features of this part of South Tyrol.
