Between South Tyrol and Trentino lies a region that retains a unique identity within the Alps. It is the Upper Val di Non, also known as Deutschnonsberg, a mountainous region in the province of Bolzano that preserves one of the most distinctive cultural identities in the Alps.
Nestled amongst woods, meadows and high-altitude pastures, at altitudes ranging from 1,150 to 1,550 metres, these mountain villages harbour a distinctive history. Although they belong geographically to the Val di Non, their inhabitants have spoken a variant of South Tyrolean German for over a thousand years, giving rise to a cultural reality that is unrivalled in the Alps.

Its location on the border between two worlds has profoundly shaped the character of the region. For centuries, the routes crossing these mountains have facilitated encounters between different peoples, languages and traditions. The result is a region that does not represent a border in the traditional sense of the word, but rather a space for interaction and exchange, where the German-speaking and Italian-speaking Alpine worlds have left deep and still recognisable traces.

This distinctive character is reflected in the architecture of the villages, local customs, cuisine and the strong connection to the mountains. Farmsteads, churches, footpaths and ancient traditions tell a story of mutual influence, where elements of Tyrolean culture and Trentino tradition coexist naturally. It is no coincidence that the Upper Val di Non is often described as a true melting pot of cultures.
Among the area’s most iconic sites is the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Senale, one of the oldest places of pilgrimage in the entire historic region of Tyrol. The earliest documentary evidence dates back to the 12th century, when a hospice already stood next to the church to welcome travellers and pilgrims crossing the Passo Palade along the ancient route linking the Val d’Adige to the Val di Non. Even today, the sanctuary remains an important spiritual and cultural landmark for the entire area.

The Upper Val di Non is an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic mountain experience away from the main tourist routes. Scenic trails wind through woods, meadows and high-altitude pastures, leading to some of the area’s most popular attractions, such as the Lake San Felice and the Tret Waterfall. Dominating the landscape is Monte Luco, the iconic mountain of the Upper Val di Non, whilst to the west stretches the long Maddalene range, one of the most unspoilt and least developed mountain ranges in the Eastern Alps. With its mountain huts, woods and sweeping views, the area invites you to explore it at a leisurely pace, following the rhythm of the seasons.

The four communities still maintain a strong connection with mountain farming today. Meadows and pastures shape the landscape and contribute to the production of milk, cheese and other specialities that reflect the rural identity of the area. Here, the mountains are not merely a natural backdrop, but an environment that has been lived in and cherished for generations.

The local cuisine also reflects this deep connection with nature and the seasons. In spring, wild dandelions take centre stage during the famous Dandelion Weeks, one of South Tyrol’s longest-running culinary events. In autumn, meanwhile, the late-harvest radicchio grown on the high plateaus of the Upper Non Valley is celebrated with events, tastings and culinary creations that showcase the local agricultural tradition.

Visiting the Upper Val di Non means discovering a region that has managed to preserve its identity over time without losing touch with the world around it. With its alpine landscapes, villages steeped in history, living traditions and a culture born of the meeting of different worlds, the Upper Val di Non offers an authentic and surprising experience, far removed from stereotypes and close to the very soul of the Alps.
