Acqua Ruggia Fountain

Acqua Ruggia Fountain

The Acqua Ruggia Fountain is one of the most distinctive and iconic landmarks of Casalvecchio Siculo. Situated along one of the village’s ancient thoroughfares, it has for centuries served as a meeting place for the community and an important part of daily life in the village. Its name is linked to a fascinating folk tradition: according to legend, it was here that the Norman count Ruggero II d’Altavilla stopped to drink during one of his visits to the area.

The fountain is recognisable by its distinctive ceramic decorations depicting scenes of rural life, a testament to the agricultural roots of the Casalvecchio area. Among the panels is also an image of Saint Onofrio, the village’s patron saint, highlighting the link between local spirituality and the spaces of daily life.

The water flows from two masks carved from local stone, decorative elements typical of historic Sicilian fountains. Next to the main structure is a characteristic covered wash house, once used by the village women for washing clothes, and an ancient drinking trough for animals, a testament to the rural character that has defined village life for centuries.

The Acqua Ruggia Fountain is not merely a water source, but a place steeped in collective memory. It was here that people gathered to socialise and go about their daily work, transforming the fountain into a shared community space. Even today, it remains one of the most evocative spots in Casalvecchio Siculo, where tradition, history and everyday life continue to intertwine.
