Nestled amongst the greenery near the hamlet of Selva, the Convent of the Holy Trinity is a place brimming with charm, where history, art and legend intertwine within the picturesque natural setting on the slopes of Mount Amiata. It was founded in the late 15th century at the behest of Guido Sforza, a figure linked to a folk tradition as fascinating as it is symbolic.
According to legend, it was here that the count defeated a terrible dragon that was plaguing the area, spreading fear amongst shepherds and locals. The victory over the monster, which fed on flocks and threatened the population, led to the construction of the convent as a sign of gratitude and divine protection. Entrusted to the Franciscans, the complex soon became an important spiritual and religious centre for the region.
Inside the church are works of great artistic value, which bear witness to the cultural richness of the area. Among these, an imposing crucifix in the Robbia style, attributed to Benedetto Buglioni, stands out; it is characterised by a powerful expressiveness and the refined craftsmanship typical of the Tuscan tradition. Also of particular interest is an altarpiece by Girolamo di Benvenuto, an artist active between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, which further enriches the convent’s artistic heritage.
Today, the Convent of the Holy Trinity is a place of great charm, where the silence of nature and historical memory coexist in perfect harmony. An ideal destination for those wishing to discover an authentic corner of Tuscany, amidst spirituality, art and ancient legends.
