The column of Pallas Athena or Minerva, which today is located in the center of Piazza d’Armi in front of the Galleria degli Antichi, until 1932 was located at the intersection of the ancient Via Giulia and today’s Via Dondi.
It was built on the side of the ancient Via Giulia, the current Via Vespasiano Gonzaga, in 1583 and moved to the center of Piazza d’Armi at the beginning of the 20th century.
The fluted botticino stem was provided with a base and bronze capital cast by the goldsmith Andrea Cavalli, while the statue of the goddess Athena is a late antique sculpture, part of the archaeological collection.
