Ancient theater

Vincenzo Scamozzi, after having built the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, in May 1588 arrived in Sabbioneta and designed the court theater, built between 1588 and 1590.
Jewel of rare beauty, built from nothing and not bound by pre-existing structures, the theater plays a role of primary importance in the context of European theatrical buildings.
In the loggia at the twelve Corinthian order columns are placed as many stucco statues depicting the gods of Olympus.
Outside the theater, then, to witness the love that Gonzaga nurtured for Rome and the Roman world, we find the inscription in capitals “ROMA QVANTA FVIT IPSA RVINA DOCET” (how great Rome bears witness to its own ruin). The building was inaugurated on the occasion of the 1590 Carnival celebrations.
The current fixed scene, mounted in 1996, replaces the original Scamozzi destroyed in the eighteenth century.

Today it is home to concerts, conferences and cultural events.
