Gallery of the Ancients

The Gallery or “Big Corridor” was built between 1584 and 1586 with the intention of housing the works of art and the impressive collections of archaeological finds of the duke.
96 meters long it is the third largest in Europe after the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the Gallery of Geographic Maps of the Vatican. The walls decorated with frescoes depicting female allegories and perspective squares were made in 1587 by Giovanni and Alessandro Alberti.
The collection of ancient marbles and trophies remained inside the building until 1773, when, by an Austrian decree, it was transferred to the Mantua Academy Building.
