Maria S.S. del Carmelo Sanctuary

The construction of the Maria S.S. del Carmelo Sanctuary in Curinga began on October 25, 1652, when Carmelite friars moved in from the convent of Sant’Elia Vecchio, bringing with them a tradition of Marian devotion that has taken root in the area. The monastic complex is a place of worship rich in history and spirituality and is characterized by a sober but fascinating architecture, with a single nave distinguished by a barrel vault, creating an atmosphere of recollection and serenity.

Over the years, the church has undergone several renovations that have enriched its appearance. Between 1865 and 1911, the interior was decorated with light and refined stucco work that lends a touch of elegance without weighing down the room. A visually striking element is the circular dome, elegantly set in an octagonal tiburium, which overlooks the circular apse where there is a majestic altar worked in polychrome stucco. This altar is one of the focal points of the sanctuary, drawing the attention of visitors and worshippers alike.

Another valuable element is the organ, made in 1845, which is located on the chancel above the main door of the shrine. This musical instrument helps create a mystical atmosphere during liturgical celebrations, accompanying the chants and prayers with its melodies.

The bell tower, which towers next to the church, adds an additional touch of beauty to the surrounding landscape and marks the rhythm of the community’s daily life. Not to be outdone is the Carmelite convent, which provides shelter for the friars and is a place of formation and spirituality.

Finally, the underground cemetery, an integral part of the complex, testifies to the deep connection between the shrine and the monastic tradition. Every corner of the Maria S.S. del Carmelo Shrine tells stories of faith, devotion and community, making it a valuable place for visitors and a spiritual reference point for the faithful.
