Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo

Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo

The Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo is one of Lucignano’s most iconic religious buildings, situated in the heart of the village and closely linked to its architectural and spiritual history.

The current structure was rebuilt in 1593 to a design by the architect Orazio Porta, who gave the church an elegant and harmonious layout. However, the façade remained unfinished: even today, only the lower part is visible, an element that lends the building a particular charm, suspended between design and reality.

The main portal, created in 1715 by Pietro Antonio Morozzi, is one of the church’s most significant decorative features, embellishing the entrance with simple yet refined lines. The spectacular staircase leading to the collegiate church is attributed to Andrea Pozzo, who is also credited with designing the bell tower, helping to define the building’s distinctive silhouette against the urban landscape.

The Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo fits perfectly into the architectural fabric of Lucignano, a village renowned for its concentric layout and medieval urban plan. Even today, it remains an important religious and historical landmark, capable of recounting, through its forms and its unfinished features, the artistic and cultural history of the region.
