Church of St. Anthony

The Church of St. Anthony in Arquata Scrivia is a site of significant historical and spiritual importance. The earliest evidence of its existence dates back to 1452, as attested by the plaque on the left facade that attributes its construction to the initiative of Bartolomeo Groffoglieti. Originally located far from the town, the church may have served as a reference point for wayfarers and an itinerant function over the centuries.

The bell tower, a distinctive element of the complex, underwent restoration in 1956, which enriched the church’s sound with two bells from the oratory of the confraternity of St. Charles, added to the bell previously moved from the sanctuary of Montaldero. In 1964, a fourth bell, specially cast, was added.

Throughout the past century, the little church has been a coveted setting for wedding celebrations, a tradition that found new vigor after its solemn reopening on January 16, 2005. This little church is not only a sacred building but also an unchanged witness to the past, still welcoming those who wish to be united in marriage in a setting steeped in history.
