San Candido

San Candido, an enchanting municipality located in the autonomous province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol, is a prime tourist destination that embodies the magic of Alta Pusteria and the magnificent Dolomites. Nestled in the Tre Cime Nature Park, San Candido is not only a world-renowned winter ski resort, but also a place rich in history, culture, and unique experiences throughout the year. With a past rooted in 1000 B.C. and a history that embraces Illyrian, Celtic, Slavic and Bavarian influences, this village is a living testament to the area's profound cultural and social transformations.

The earliest traces of settlement in San Candido date from around 1000 B.C., when the area began to be populated thanks to the Illyrians and later the Celts. The real evolution of the village began in the 6th century, marked by dramatic events such as the destruction caused by battles between the Slavs and Bavarians. However, with the founding of the Benedictine monastery in 769, the town began to prosper, thanks to the efforts of Duke Tassilon III of Bavaria to support the population and counter Slavic incursions.

The historical importance of San Candido was further recognized in 965, when the Roman Emperor Otto I of Saxony granted it independence from the German Empire. In the following centuries, the village became a religious center, attracting large numbers of pilgrims thanks to its many places of worship, which were complemented by elegant 18th- and 14th-century residences. The arrival of World War I temporarily transformed San Candido into a hospital center, thanks to its strategic location.

In 1918, with the partition of Tyrol between Austria and Italy, the town was assigned to Italy, leading to further economic and infrastructural development. The economy of San Candido has traditionally been based on agriculture and animal husbandry, with a special emphasis on the production of speck and the natural mineral water "Kaiserwasser," a resource with a long history associated with Austrian nobility.

San Candido is not only a place where history and culture intertwine, it is also a paradise for food lovers. Local restaurants offer typical dishes prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients, such as venison goulash, speck dumplings, and traditional Schlutzkrapfen. Desserts, including apple strüdel and San Candido pancakes, are the perfect desserts to end a meal in a delicious way.

San Candido's natural attractions are simply breathtaking. In summer, hiking enthusiasts can immerse themselves in trekking routes that wind through the peaks of the Dolomites, while cyclists can explore the many mountain bike trails. In winter, the San Candido ski resort turns into a playground for sports enthusiasts, offering a wide range of slopes and opportunities for skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities.

But it's not just sports that make this resort special. The indoor Acquafun pool is a perfect option for families, with a large 75-meter slide, dedicated areas for children, and a pool for non-swimmers. In addition, San Candido's cultural heritage is represented by attractions such as the Collegiate Church with its crypt and the "Dolomythos" Museum, which delights visitors with fascinating stories about dinosaurs and the evolution of the Dolomites.

Finally, don't forget to explore San Candido's lively pedestrian zone, where boutiques, artisan stores and cozy cafes await you for a relaxing break. It doesn't matter if you are a sports fan, culture enthusiast, or simply looking to relax: San Candido offers everything you need for an unforgettable vacation.

Come and discover San Candido, a place where natural beauty combines with a rich and fascinating tradition for a unique experience in the heart of the Dolomites.
