The church, which from the 8th to the 12th century served as the original parish church of San Candido and was responsible for much of eastern Pusteria, was also the main church for the pastoral care of the Marca di San Candido and, until 1803, was under the jurisdiction of the Lordship of Frisinga.
Originally built in the Romanesque style in 1735, this church was later transformed into a Baroque masterpiece and stands as an important example of Tyrolean sacred architecture. The interior paintings, created around 1760, are the work of the brilliant Baroque painter Christoph Anton Mayr of Schwaz. The altars were constructed by master altar-maker Josef Stauder of San Candido around 1850; the paintings on the side altars are by Carl Jehle, whilst the beautiful high altarpiece is by Karl Blaas. The exterior, with its west façade, is a sight to behold in the centre of San Candido.
