In the valleys of Racines in South Tyrol, an ancient tradition is celebrated with enthusiasm and joy every year at the end of September: The Alpine transhumance, called “Almabtrieb.” After months of enjoyment on the fields and regeneration in the sun ahead of winter, cows and their calves, ewes and lambs descend to the valley from the mountains. There, the many spectators await the festively decorated animals. The welcome in the valley is simply festive for all; music, good tastes and program on the side!

History and significance of Alpine Transhumance

As summer slowly draws to a close, farmers fetch their cows, calves, and sheep from the pastures-this seasonal transfer of livestock between summer and winter grazing areas is called alpine transhumance, Not surprisingly, this practice has deep roots in the region’s farming culture: In the summer months, shepherds take their beasts to higher alpine areas where grass is lush and abundant. Then, with the arrival of winter, the animals return to their stables where they are fed and find shelter during the colder months. This practice has a long history in the Alps. Originally, it was used to bring the beasts safely back from the alps to the stables before the arrival of winter, but today, the event is considered an occasion to celebrate the return of the animals and recognize the collaboration between farmers, herders, and animals. It is also a way to preserve and celebrate the rich alpine culture and traditions, which is worth experiencing!

Preparations, tradition and festivities

Although the festivities in the valley take place toward afternoon, preparations for “Almabtrieb” begin early in the morning: Farmers and shepherds lovingly prepare their herds for the return to the valley. The animals are adorned with wreaths of flowers and traditional cowbells that jingle merrily as they make their way down the mountain. In addition, traditional costumes are worn. Once in the valley, the whole community gathers to welcome the descending herds. Transhumance would not be complete without traditional music, great company and typical South Tyrolean food specialties. Good tastes and fun are guaranteed!
