Hidden among the majestic peaks of the Alps, the valleys of Ratschings offer not only breathtaking views but also a rich historical and cultural heritage. We highlight three places that tell fascinating stories of this area’s past: the Wolfsthurn Castle in Mareta, the Ridnaun Mining Museum, and the Little Church of St. Magdalena, Ridnaun.
Wolfsthurn Castle: Baroque splendor behind 365 windows
For anyone who ventures among the villages of Racines, the imposing Wolfsthurn Castle does not go unnoticed. Located on a hill above the village of Mareta, this baroque castle dating back to the 17th century enchants with its majesty and history. Originally built as a military fortress, Wolfsthurn Castle has undergone several transformations over time, passing from the hands of local noble families to those of prominent figures of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Today, the castle is a valuable reminder of the region’s noble past and houses the Provincial Museum of Hunting and Fishing. In addition to collections of hunting trophies and antique weapons, visitors can admire the original frescoes that decorate the castle’s halls and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a bygone era. Wolfsthurn Castle is an essential stop for those who wish to experience the charm and grandeur of aristocratic life in the Alps.
Wolfsthurn Castle reopens its doors on April 16 and is pleased, to welcome you!
The Ridanna Mining Museum: Discovering Industrial Roots
In the heart of Val Ridanna, the Mining Museum offers a fascinating journey into the underground world of mining. This region has been a vital mining center for centuries; its silver, lead and zinc mines have contributed to the area’s wealth and shaped its identity. An ore enrichment plant, among the most modern for the time, was built here 150 years ago and operated until the mid-20th century. In the open air, it is still possible to see the rail transport facility, which, for its kind, is the largest in the world with impressive inclined planes and horse-drawn haulage tracks connecting the mining district high in the mountains. In fact, one of the tunnels, called the Poschhaus, runs through the mountain for 6 kilometers and flows into the Passeier Valley.

Today, the museum is located inside the former Monteneve Mine. Through guided tours and interactive exhibits, visitors can explore the underground tunnels and galleries, discovering the hard work and living conditions of the miners of yesteryear. In addition to showing the technical and industrial aspects of mining, the museum also offers a glimpse into the daily lives of miners and their importance to the local economy. In fact, many of them were immigrants from central Italy who, upon arriving in the Alps, were faced with a reality that was completely unknown to them: Photographs, historical documents and personal items bear witness to this.

This spring invites us to experience new adventures and rediscover the world above and below ground. The Provincial Mining Museum reopens its doors on April 16 and looks forward to accompanying you on daring explorations.
The Little Church of St. Magdalena in Ridanna: A Spiritual Treasure
Speaking of the mining world of Ridnaun, it is worth mentioning the Little Church of St. Magdalene, patron saint of miners. Situated in the mountains, this church dates back to the 14th century and was built by the miners of Monteneve in dedication to their patroness, but also to demonstrate the wealth of the area during the heyday of the mining industry. Today it represents a splendid example of Alpine religious architecture.

Inside, the church preserves original frescoes from the Gothic and Baroque periods, evidence of the sacred art of the time. Small but precious, even getting to the church is special: the path to the destination winds its way through the enchanting landscape of Val Ridanna, passing meadows and forests. For those intrigued: From the beginning of May to the beginning of November, guided tours take place, free of charge and without reservations.
