The Church of San Nicola di Mira is the mother church of Trebisacce, a sacred building with ancient origins rooted in the Byzantine tradition and dating back to around the year 1000. Over the centuries, the structure has undergone numerous transformations: the most significant alterations date back to the 16th century, whilst its current appearance reflects the renovations of the late 18th century, which gave the building elegant Baroque features.
The exterior is simple yet harmonious, blending seamlessly into the historic fabric of the village, whilst the interior reveals a richly evocative space, where architectural elements from different eras intertwine, bearing witness to the long history of the church and the community that has preserved it over time.
Among the most fascinating works housed within the church, a 15th-century wooden crucifix stands out, shrouded in an aura of mystery. The artefact was discovered by chance during restoration work, hidden in an underground chamber of the church alongside other statues. It was likely concealed to protect it in times of danger, a measure that has ensured its preservation to the present day.
Today, this crucifix represents not only a work of great artistic and devotional value, but also one of Trebisacce’s most distinctive symbols, capable of attracting visitors, scholars and curious onlookers fascinated by its history.
Taken as a whole, the Church of San Nicola di Mira is much more than a place of worship: it is a living testament to the village’s historical memory, where art, faith and tradition continue to interact across the centuries.
