Hermitage Of San Michele

Hermitage Of San Michele

The Hermitage of San Michele is one of the most evocative and spiritual sites in the Tremosine sul Garda area, nestled in the tranquillity of the San Michele Valley, at the foot of Mount Tremalzo, within the Alto Garda Bresciano Park. Surrounded by woods and ancient mule tracks, this small sanctuary holds centuries of history, devotion and mystery within a natural setting of extraordinary beauty.

The hermitage stands in a panoramic position on a hill overlooking the entire valley, a site that in the past may also have served as a vantage point for monitoring the surrounding area. Its origins are ancient and, according to some theories, may even date back to the Lombard era. After their conversion to Christianity, the Lombards chose Saint Michael the Archangel as their patron saint, dedicating numerous places of worship to him along mountain routes and at strategic points.

The hermitage’s current structure dates mainly to the 14th century, although the lower walls preserve older building techniques that bear witness to an earlier origin, probably around the year 1000. Indeed, some archaeological finds discovered in the area confirm the presence of a very ancient medieval settlement. The church features a simple single nave with a polygonal apse, perfectly integrated into the natural surroundings.

In 1679, the Veronese priest Florenio Feliberi transformed the sanctuary into a true hermitage, choosing to live here in solitude until his death. Even today, the small hermitage retains that intimate and contemplative atmosphere which has attracted pilgrims and walkers for centuries. After a period of neglect during the 19th century, the complex was entrusted to the Franciscan friars, who preserve its spiritual legacy.

Devotion to Saint Michael in these parts was also deeply intertwined with the daily lives of the local people. In the valleys of Lake Garda, there were in fact many charcoal burners and forge workers, groups who regarded Saint Michael as their patron saint as he was symbolically linked to fire and strength.

Reaching the Hermitage of San Michele means traversing one of the most fascinating natural areas of the Brescia side of Lake Garda. The paths winding through the valley offer pleasant walks through woods, pastures and mountain views, ideal for families too. After the Alpe del Garda Dairy, the valley opens out into wide, flat meadows, making the route even more picturesque and accessible.

On the days dedicated to St Michael, 8 May and 29 September, the path once came alive with worshippers in procession heading towards the sanctuary, keeping alive a religious tradition deeply rooted in the local area.

Today, the Hermitage of San Michele is a place where spirituality, history and nature blend harmoniously, offering visitors an authentic experience amidst the mountains and tranquillity of Lake Garda.
