Hermitage of San Valentino

Hermitage of San Valentino

The Hermitage of San Valentino is one of the most evocative and scenic spots on Lake Garda, suspended between sky, rock and woodland above the town of Gargnano. Perched at an altitude of 772 metres, this small sanctuary overlooks the lake from a spectacular vantage point, offering extraordinary views of Lake Garda, Monte Baldo and the villages along the Brescia shore.

The hermitage can be reached via a charming hiking trail that starts from the hamlet of Sasso. The path winds through fields, woods and ancient mule tracks, alternating between easy stretches and steeper sections among the rocks. The walk, short but very picturesque, allows you to immerse yourself in the tranquillity of nature and discover one of the most mystical corners of Upper Garda.

The small church seems to rise directly from the mountain: its 15th-century interior walls are in fact built against the natural rock, which serves as both protection and support. According to tradition, the hermitage was built in the 17th century by the inhabitants of Gargnano who took refuge among these cliffs to escape the terrible plague of 1630. The sanctuary would therefore represent a votive offering and a symbol of gratitude for the salvation obtained during the epidemic.

The building retains a simple, intimate atmosphere. Inside, there is a single altar decorated with a painting depicting the Virgin Mary flanked by two saints, whilst next to the chapel are a series of small rooms carved out of the rock, which were once used as dwellings by the hermits who looked after the sanctuary.

Over the centuries, the Hermitage of San Valentino was home to several hermits. The last was Andrea Paladini, known as the hermit of San Valentino, who died in 1865 after spending most of his life here. The little church also houses a portrait of Geremia Paladini, a figure who is said to have inspired the Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter to create the character of old Hieronymus in his novel The Two Sisters.

The Hermitage of San Valentino is now a much-loved destination for hikers and those seeking authentic places where nature, silence and spirituality coexist harmoniously. From the natural terrace in front of the little church, the view opens up to one of the most beautiful panoramas of Lake Garda, in an atmosphere that conveys peace and contemplation.
