The Church of San Giacomo di Calino, in Gargnano, is a small Romanesque chapel of great artistic interest, which preserves frescoes dating back to the 14th century. On the southern exterior wall, the image of Saint Christopher with the Child on his shoulders is clearly visible, painted life-size so that it could be seen even from a distance. According to tradition, anyone who looked at the image of the saint would be protected from sudden death for the rest of the day.
The chapel’s altar is dedicated to St James the Greater, of whom a wooden statue dating back to 1501 is preserved. The current entrance door dates back to the 16th century, as do the two small square windows, which were opened by St Charles Borromeo during his Apostolic Visit in August 1580.
