Ciano is the hamlet of Zocca furthest from the main town. Like other villages in the municipality of Zocca, this hamlet has expanded and developed considerably, partly due to the increase in traffic on the road that runs through it, but above all thanks to the hard-working nature of its inhabitants and their expertise in the agricultural sector.
In Ciano, we find table grapes and fine wine grapes; livestock farming is also extensive. Formerly known as Cilano, it was first mentioned in 934. In the 12th century, it was under the authority of its own vassals, who were subject to the sovereignty of the municipality of Modena, which had it fortified. Its dominion passed under the Estesi family, who incorporated it into the podesteria of Montetortore, and in 1637 the Marquis Francesco Montecuccoli placed it under the podesteria of Guiglia, with his descendants continuing to hold it until 1797.
The church of San Lorenzo dates back to the early 1900s: its recently restored organ is particularly noteworthy. Of some interest are the rural hamlet with an 18th-century oratory known as ‘I Boschi’ and the ruins of the castle walls and an oratory in the locality of Castellaccio.
