The Church of St. John the Baptist in Scansano has been documented since 1276, although the building we see today is the result of extensive renovations carried out in the 18th century. The gabled façade is embellished with a 15th-century portal decorated with an ovoli frame, one of the oldest architectural elements of the church.
Inside, the altars made of plaster and stucco in the 18th century stand out, as well as several interesting paintings. These include the Madonna presenting the Child to Saint Anne, dating back to the early 17th century, the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian attributed to Stefano Volpi and the Madonna del Soccorso.
An elegant 15th-century polychrome frame decorated with festoons once housed the Madonna dell’Uccellino, a glazed terracotta from the workshop of Andrea della Robbia, stolen in 1971 and now replaced by a copy. The presbytery also houses a polychrome wooden statue of the Madonna dating back to the 15th century, while the apse features a remarkable 17th-century wooden choir.
