Among the most significant monuments in Sabbioneta, the Church of the Blessed Crowned Virgin stands out as one of the buildings most emblematic of Vespasiano Gonzaga’s political and spiritual vision. Built between 1586 and 1588 on the foundations of the ancient Church of San Nicolò, which was demolished at the Duke’s behest, the church was conceived as a dynastic mausoleum for the Gonzaga family and a place intended to preserve the memory of the founder of the ideal city.

The building features a refined octagonal plan, typical of Renaissance architecture, a symbol of perfection and balance. The exterior, sober and elegant, leads into a richly evocative interior, where art, faith and the celebration of power merge into a single monumental design.

The decorations that now adorn the interior date from the second half of the 18th century and were created by artists belonging to the school of Antonio Galli Bibiena. The decorative elements lend the rooms a dramatic elegance that harmonises beautifully with the original Renaissance architecture.

The church’s most famous feature is undoubtedly the funerary monument to Vespasiano Gonzaga, situated in the chapel to the left of the high altar. Created shortly after the duke’s death by the sculptor Giovan Battista Della Porta, the monument is crafted from exquisite polychrome marble and dominated by the monumental bronze statue of the founder of Sabbioneta. The work is one of the most important examples of late-Renaissance funerary sculpture in northern Italy.

For centuries, the church housed the duke’s remains. In 1988, the tomb was opened to allow for a thorough examination of the mortal remains of the famous military leader and statesman. Upon completion of the investigations, his remains were relocated to a room adjacent to the church, continuing to bear witness to the deep bond between Vespasiano Gonzaga and the town that he himself had designed and built.

Today, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Crowned is an unmissable stop for anyone visiting Sabbioneta. In addition to its religious significance, it preserves one of the most important chapters in Italian Renaissance history and honours the memory of the man who transformed a small town in the Po Valley into one of the most extraordinary ideal cities of the European Renaissance.
