Church of San Marco

Church of San Marco

The Church of San Marco is located in the district of the same name, about five kilometres north of the village of Locorotondo, near the Selva di Fasano. The district, one of the most populous in the area, has always been characterised by a strong community life and a very active rural fabric. At the centre of the village stands the small church dedicated to San Marco, a religious landmark for the inhabitants of the area.

Originally, this area corresponded to the hamlet of Santa Maria di Cignano, where there was a small church dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena. Around 1678, the bishop of Monopoli had a new sacred building constructed on the same site, dedicating it to San Marco. The church has a distinctive Tao-shaped layout, the result of various extensions over the centuries. The left transept is the oldest and is distinguished by its stone arches and deep niches carved into the wall. At the back, there is a wall altar and, in the floor, several trapdoors that suggest the presence of an ancient burial ground. According to some scholars, this part represented the original core of the church, which was later enlarged with two other branches that also changed its orientation.

Outside, the building is covered by cummerse roofs made with typical chiancarelle stones, in perfect harmony with the traditional construction style of the trulli houses of the Itria Valley. At the top of the façade stands a bell gable surmounted by a stone cross. In front of the church is a large square that conceals a large cistern for collecting rainwater, once used by farmers during periods of severe drought. Not far away is the more recent modern church of San Marco, recognisable by its high dome, also covered in chiancarelle.
