Mother Church of San Giorgio Martire

Mother Church of San Giorgio Martire

The Mother Church of San Giorgio in Locorotondo is one of the village’s most iconic buildings, dedicated to the patron saint and guardian of a history spanning centuries of change.

The present structure was built between 1790 and 1825 on the same site where two other churches dedicated to St George had previously stood: one dating back to the 12th century, documented as early as 1195, and a second rebuilt in the 16th century, completed in 1579. The design of the current building was entrusted to the engineers Giuseppe Gimma and Nicola Fasano, who gave the church the imposing appearance that still characterises it today. Recent restoration work has brought to light the foundations of the previous structures, now visible through striking glass inserts.

The façade, in the Neoclassical style, is distinguished by the large tympanum decorated with a relief of St George facing the dragon, flanked by statues of St Peter and St Paul. Next to it stands the majestic bell tower, approximately 47 metres high, embellished with sculptural elements from the previous church, including the figures of the Three Marys and Veronica.

The interior is laid out in a Greek cross plan and is dominated by a spectacular central dome some 35 metres high, which lends the space a sense of great light and solemnity. Among the most interesting areas is the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, which houses a precious *Bibbia Pauperum* comprising 42 illustrated panels, a testament to the tradition of religious iconography.

In the same chapel, the large canvas of The Last Supper (1841) by the painter Gennaro Maldarelli stands out; he also painted a depiction of St George. Also of considerable value is the canvas of Our Lady of the Rosary (1769), by Francesco De Mauro, framed by fifteen ovals dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary.

The side chapels are adorned with elegant Baroque altars of Neapolitan craftsmanship, created between the 18th and 19th centuries, which contribute to creating a harmonious and refined artistic ensemble.

Today, the Mother Church of St George is not only the main place of worship in Locorotondo, but also a precious treasure trove of art and memory, where the historical events of the village intertwine with the devotion of its community.
