San Gimignano is going back to the Dark Ages

San Gimignano returns to relive the Dark Ages. No, the inhabitants of the Tuscan village, famous throughout the world for its multiple towers, will not be deprived of all the comforts of today, falling back suddenly in the medieval era. The Municipality has decided to join the Earth Hour WWF 2019, scheduled for Saturday 30 March. Lights out, therefore, at the Loggia del Teatro in Piazza Duomo: this is what the administrative council has ordered, on the occasion of the international event promoted by WWF to raise awareness of energy saving and sustainable mobility.

For the occasion, the lights that illuminate the Loggia del Teatro will be switched off from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, a time when everyone is invited to turn off the lights of the house, of a building, of a monument. «We renew with enthusiasm and conviction the adherence to this initiative – explains the councilor for the environment of the Municipality of San Gimignano Niccolò Guicciardini because as municipal administration we have always embraced the objective of reducing energy consumption. For this reason, the invitation is also aimed at the whole population because they adhere to the initiative even if only by switching off their lights for an hour».

San Giminianio

The Earth Hour has reached its twelfth edition and, year after year, it is involving a growing number of institutions and private citizens. San Gimignano, also known as the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages“, is therefore preparing to darken its 72 towers, thus creating a unique spectacle of its kind, given that at night it is customary for residents and tourists to admire with their noses up “skyscrapers” of San Gimignano, illuminated among the stars. Saturday, March 30, instead, the night sky will mix with the “darkness” of the alleys of the village. And it will seem to return to the Dark Ages.
