Ecomuseum of Alabaster

The Ecomuseum of Alabaster of Volterra in Tuscany, involves the local realities linked to traditional craft and art of the alabaster: Volterra and Castellina Marittima and Santa Luce. It is divided into two distinct territorial itineraries that find reference in as many thematic museums: the itinerary of excavation, documented in Punto Museale of Castellina Marittima and the itinerary of the processing and marketing, linked to the museum of Volterra. To enrich the itineraries also contribute the archive of the area of Santa Luce for the itinerary of the excavation, the path inside a tunnel of the hollow of the screed in the Valley of the Marmolaio, the Archive of the area at the Istituto Statale d’Arte of Volterra to the itinerary of the processing and marketing of alabaster.

The documentation center set up in medieval tower-house Minucci is a very peculiar “Museum of Archeology Commercial” that the Etruscans leads to the news, with all of its specific challenges: from the finding of the stone, the quality of the same, to styles and templates used by sculptors, markets and travellers that species in the Nineteenth Century spread the knowledge of the alabaster in the world, producing, also reflected a great economic benefit to the city and its hinterland. The Museum of the alabaster of Volterra unfolds in an evocative arrangement inside the medieval tower Minucci, adjacent to the Pinacoteca Comunale. The path describes, through a careful selection of testimonies, the history of the manufacture of the alabaster from the Etruscans to our days through an original trip between the technical aspects and materials (the retrieval of the stone and the processing techniques), the stylistic (the decorative forms and reference models), the economic aspects and social (the market of alabaster and its diffusion, the life of the alabastraio and activity of bottega). Objects more significant are two cinerari in alabaster of Etruscan, two capitals that represent the only examples of the working of alabaster in the middle ages, a collection of valuable sculptures of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, a selection of medallions in alabaster work of Albino Funaioli and some works by the artist volterrano Consortini Raphael.
