Church of Santa Croce

The Church of Santa Croce, located in the quaint historic center of Sinalunga, is a place of worship steeped in history and art. This ancient church was erected in the 17th century, rising on the foundations of an earlier church dedicated to St. Martin. In 1618, the City of Sinalunga decided to cede it to the Compagnia di Santa Croce, which took possession and has run it ever since.

The facade of the building is particularly striking, characterized by an interplay of ornamental elements made of brick. Four pilasters punctuate the structure and end in a wide cornice that serves as the capitals for the front of the church, while two side niches enrich the complex with symmetry and grace.

Internally, the Church of the Holy Cross offers the faithful and visitors some remarkable examples of sacred painting that testify to the deep devotion of its ancient inhabitants. Along the left wall one can admire the painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary Salus Infirmorum, also known as Our Lady of Water. This sacred image was so named by Monsignor Francesco Maria Piccolomini, who entrusted Mary with the protection of the people of Sinalunga from the recurrent floods that in the past afflicted the flat area where the town stands.

On the right wall, however, stands another important artistic piece: the painting of the Marriage of the Virgin. Belonging to the workshop of Luca Signorelli, one of the masters of the Italian Renaissance, this painting dated 1465 is most likely the work of his grandson, Francesco Signorelli. The canvas depicts a solemn scene rich in detail, in which the technical qualities and distinctive style that made Signorelli’s workshop appreciated far beyond Tuscan borders emerge.

Upon entering this sacred edifice, believers and art lovers alike find themselves immersed in an atmosphere of faith and beauty, where religious tradition blends with local artistic history, making the Church of the Holy Cross a must-see for anyone visiting Sinalunga.
