Larth Hall – The Etruscan Rooms

In the heart of the ancient medieval village of Sinalunga is a small museum space that holds an important piece of Tuscany’s ancient history: the Larth Room-The Etruscan Rooms. Located on Via Spadaforte, these rooms represent an open window into the region’s Etruscan past, a civilization that left indelible marks on Italian culture and traditions.

The core exhibition of Larth’s Etruscan Rooms is divided into two main sections, each dedicated to a specific archaeological area: on the left, visitors are introduced to the treasures found in the Etruscan necropolis of San Giustino. These include a variety of artifacts that accompanied the deceased on their final journey, such as pottery fragments such as chalices and amphorae, cinerary urn cases and lids, exceptional fragments of Attic pottery, precious gold earrings, metal elements such as spearheads and nails, as well as game pieces, items with which the deceased were buried.

The cases on the right display artifacts from the other archaeological area, the settlement of Le Carceri. Here objects unfold in a narrative that speaks of daily life and religiosity: fragments of decorated walls and handles, votive statuettes suggesting the presence of a temple, a mold-decorated chalice, knobs, and fragments of vessels decorated with the cylinder technique. There is also no shortage of everyday working tools such as a bronze needle and terracotta loom weights, which give a tangible picture of daily Etruscan life.

The very name of the Rooms, “Larth,” is a tribute to one of the most significant pieces of evidence found: a funerary inscription on an urn from San Giustino that evokes a still-mysterious family or social connection, probably traceable to a socially prominent individual or family.

The highlight of the museum experience comes in the last room, where a room has been set up that faithfully reproduces Tomb 7 of the San Giustino necropolis. This reproduction, precise in detail, allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of an archaeological discovery, presenting objects exactly as they were found by archaeologists, meticulously reconstructing the original funerary arrangement.

Visiting them is thus a way to get closer not only to the objects, but to the very essence of a lost civilization, to experience the excitement that only the discovery of the past can give. All in all, the Larth Hall is a valuable container of history, allowing us to learn about and appreciate a fundamental aspect of the historical legacy of Sinalunga and Tuscany.
