Ultimo Castle, also known as Eschenlohe Castle, is located in the municipality of San Pancrazio in the picturesque Val d’Ultimo in South Tyrol. This charming castle stands 8 kilometers from Lana and about 2 kilometers before San Pancrazio, situated on a wooded peak at the confluence of the Hagenbach stream and the Valsura (Falschauer) stream.
Today, what remains of Eschenlohe Castle are mainly the keep, the remains of the surrounding wall, and some ruins of a second fortified building. These vestiges offer a nostalgic glimpse into the region’s medieval past, although the fortification is not currently accessible to visitors.
An interesting detail is that the castle is depicted in the municipal coat of arms of St. Pancras, symbolizing its historical significance to the local community. Despite its current state of partial ruin, Eschenlohe Castle continues to be an important historical icon and landmark in Val d’Ultimo, evoking images of the life and battles that once animated this medieval fortress.
