Church of the Assumption

Church of the Assumption

The Church of the Assumption, also known as the “Chiesa Nuova”, is one of the most iconic historic buildings in Montesano sulla Marcellana. Built in the early 18th century at the behest of the Gerbasio brothers of Naples, prominent members of the local nobility, the church remains a precious symbol of the link between art, spirituality and aristocratic prestige in the Vallo di Diano region.

The building, now donated to the Municipality of Montesano sulla Marcellana, is striking for its architectural grandeur and its original Greek cross plan, a clear reference to the Byzantine tradition. The whole conveys a sense of balance and monumentality that makes the structure unique within the religious landscape of the area.

The façade, constructed of brick and cut stone, stands out for the elegance of its proportions and the attention to decorative detail. The architectural elements reflect the refined taste of 18th-century southern Italian art, which successfully blends simplicity with ornate richness to create a result of great charm.

Inside the church there are two fine marble sculptures dedicated to the noble patrons who commissioned the work. The statues, executed with great technical skill, reflect the style of the famous Neapolitan workshops of the 18th century and are associated with the artistic circle of masters such as Matteo Bottiglieri and Giuseppe Sammartino, leading figures of the great Neapolitan Baroque period.

Today, the Chiesa Nuova stands as an important historical and cultural landmark for the local community, a place that tells the story of the Gerbasio family and the artistic prestige achieved by Montesano sulla Marcellana during the 18th century. Visiting this building means immersing oneself in an elegant and timeless atmosphere, amidst solemn architecture, sacred art and historical memory.
