Ventimiglia jump

Just beyond the church of San Giuliano, at the Mendolilla alley, there is a panoramic overlook over the eastern valley of the town, whose vast horizon reaches as far as the slopes of Etna.

The belvedere è was built in the place that, according to historiographic traction based on the writings of the chronicler Michele da Piazza and the historian Tommaso Fazello, was the scene of the death of Francesco I Ventimiglia; from here, in fact, in 1337 the count of Geraci, pursued by the royal troops of Pietro II d’Aragona, allegedly threw himself and his horse plunging into the very deep cliff below.

A steel and glass walkway jutting about three meters from the edge of the wall allows one to metaphorically relive Ventimiglia’s leap into the void; moreover, to accompany the overlook, in the adjoining ground-floor room of the Municipal Library è an information center equipped with a multimedia station was set up and artistic terracotta bas-reliefs centered on the history of the place, the work of Santo Stefano di Camastra ceramist Filadelfio Todaro.
