Church of Santa Maria della Catena

The church, located near the ancient Porta Vasana gate, can be traced back to the 15th century; its construction is thought to be after the spread in Sicily of the cult of the Madonna della Catena, which followed the miracle that took place in Palermo in 1392, when, according to tradition, three young men condemned to death were saved by the intervention of the Virgin, who broke the chains on their wrists. The small hall è is covered by a wooden roof, of which the original trusses remain, resting on corbels carved and figured with human faces (the secondary warp è was rebuilt in recent years); they repropose a typology widespread in the Sicilian building tradition, of which the (certainly older) corbels disused from the ceiling of Cefalù cathedral are an example. In addition to the 17th-century oval painting of Our Lady of the Chain, the church è houses the statue of St. Roch in the usual iconographic attributes; the sculpture still retains its original colors and, although related to 16th-century models, should be referred to Giancola Viviano and dated to the second decade of the 17th century.
