Duino Cliffs Natural Reserve

Riserva Naturale delle Falesie di Duino

The high degree of biodiversity gives life to a landscape of rare beauty, characterized by white calcareous embankments to peak on the sea. The trail named after the poet bohemian Rainer Maria Rilke, inaugurated in 1987, extends to 1700 meters and allows access to the Natural Reserve of the cliffs from Sistiana or from Duino; the path has a trend is substantially flat, which allows anyone to tackle the walk.

The Cliffs of Duino are formed – as the entire karst plateau – from carbonatiche rocks, born from the sedimentation of shells of animals on the bottom of a shallow sea. Despite a good part of the surface of the reserve is covered by the typical vegetation continental, the area placed under guardianship makes evident the passage from the forest to the mediterranean maquis composed prevalently of holm oaks and hornbeams, which, approaching the sea, leave space to shrubs. This is a suitable habitat for reptiles (snakes, vipers and lizards) and nesting birds sedentary such as the royal seagull, the raven and the peregrine falcon, inserted in the list of animals in danger of extinction, who has taken refuge in the zones more inaccessible of cliffs. In autumn and in spring it is easy to observe various migratory species or wintering birds while the pine forest hosts chaffinches, jays, peaks, sparrow hawks and even some colonies of squirrels.

Services and Accessibility: parking, bar or restaurant outside the park, refreshment points, benches pic-nic, Parking campers, Camping.

It is strictly forbidden to tread the path by bike.
