Duino-Devin

Nestled between the white cliffs overlooking the Adriatic Sea and the slopes of Mount Ermada, Duino is one of the most picturesque villages in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Its charm stems from the combination of spectacular landscapes, historical landmarks and a romantic atmosphere that has captivated travellers, artists and writers for centuries.

The heart of the village centres on the imposing Duino Castle, which remains the residence of the Princes of Torre and Tasso to this day and commands a privileged view of the sea. The elegant historic halls, the park teeming with Mediterranean flora, the Second World War bunker and the splendid gardens all tell a story spanning centuries, whilst nearby the ruins of the Old Castle serve as a reminder of the medieval origins of the Duino lordship. Between the two castles, one of the area’s most famous legends comes to life: that of the White Lady, the stone figure that seems to watch over the cliffs below.

As you stroll through the historic centre, you’ll walk along the ancient ‘ulca’, the characteristic narrow lane that runs alongside the castle walls and winds its way through a maze of stone houses, offering panoramic views and charming little corners. At the foot of the village lies the picturesque little harbour, whilst just offshore lies the famous Isolotto di Dante, linked to the tradition that the Great Poet was inspired by these places during his journey to Trieste.

Duino is also known throughout the world for the Rilke Walk, one of Italy’s most spectacular scenic trails. The route passes through the Duino Cliffs Nature Reserve, offering breathtaking views of the Gulf of Trieste, and takes its name from the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who stayed at the castle and found the inspiration here to begin his famous Duino Elegies. Over the centuries, the castle also hosted figures of the calibre of Franz Liszt, Johann Strauss, Mark Twain and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, becoming an important European cultural centre.

Nature lovers can explore the Cernizza woods, visit the source of the Timavo, explore the palaeontological site or climb Mount Ermada, where sinkholes, caves, First World War trenches and ancient ruins bear witness to the deep connection between this area and its history.

Duino’s origins date back to the late Copper Age, as evidenced by archaeological finds that confirm a continuous human presence over the millennia. Having belonged to the Duchy of Carniola and subsequently to the County of Gorizia and Gradisca under Habsburg rule, the village became part of Italy after the First World War. Since 1928, it has been part of the municipality of Duino-Aurisina and, since 1982, has been home to the prestigious United World College of the Adriatic, an international school that welcomes students from dozens of countries.

Amidst the scent of the Mediterranean scrub, the white of the karst rock and the deep blue of the sea, Duino offers an experience that brings together history, culture and nature in one of the most breathtaking landscapes of the Upper Adriatic. It is a village to be savoured at a leisurely pace, letting yourself be guided by the sound of the waves, the charm of its castles and the timeless beauty of its cliffs.
