Church of Saint Thomas

Church of Saint Thomas

The Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle is located in the village of Dolcedo, in Liguria. Dating back to the Middle Ages, it took on its present appearance following reconstruction work that began in 1717 and was completed in 1738. It features a Baroque façade, preceded by a portico of black stone columns, which preserves the 15th-century portal inside. The interior has a Greek cross plan with three naves and a deep apse. There are nine altars inside, some of which are situated in chapels. The second altar in the right-hand aisle houses a painting by Gregorio De Ferrari depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Peter of Verona, whilst the third from the left features another painting attributed to the school of Cambiaso depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Stephen. The paintings in the apse, depicting the Nativity of the Virgin, the Marriage of the Virgin and the Death of the Virgin, are attributed to the Carrega brothers. The church also houses a wooden statue of Our Lady of the Rosary and a high altar in polychrome marble. The 18th-century choir stalls are made of inlaid walnut, in the Piedmontese style. In 1789, the body of Saint Prospero was placed in the second chapel of the left aisle; it had been donated to the church by the Capuchin friar and preacher Giobatta, a native of Dolcedo.
