The Fortress of Montepoggiolo rises 3 km from Terra del Sole on a modest relief that gives it strategic importance, so much so that it was disputed between the towns of Forlì, Faenza and Castrocaro, the Ordelaffi and Manfredi families, the Holy See and the Florentine seigniory.
At the end of the 16th century its importance declined following the erection of the fortress town of Terra del Sole.
The fort has an irregular four-sided plan with four very prominent cylindrical towers that are profusely inclined at the corners.
Surrounding the fortress was a large dry polycarbonate moat equipped with a shoe stop wall. Inside certainly the fortress commander’s residence, parade ground, casemates and patrol corridors.
