Church of Santa Lucia

Church of Santa Lucia

The Church of Santa Lucia is one of the oldest and most evocative places of worship in the Casamassima area, situated along the road leading to Acquaviva, about 500 metres from the town centre. Nestled in a peaceful, rural setting, it stands as a valuable testament to the religious history of this Apulian village.

Its origins date back to around the year 1000, although the present building was probably constructed during the 13th century. Over time, the church has maintained a strong bond with the local community, becoming a focal point for popular devotion.

The interior, simple and intimate, houses several works of particular value. Among these, a 16th-century stone statue of Saint Lucy stands out, still venerated today by the village’s inhabitants. The presence of this sculpture bears witness to the continuity of worship and the deep bond between the place and the local religious tradition.

The little church, despite its architectural simplicity, retains an authentic charm born of history, faith and simplicity. Visiting it, one has the sensation of entering a space suspended in time, where spirituality is expressed in sober forms yet deeply rooted in the local culture.
