St. Ambrose Parish

Parrocchia Sant'Ambrogio

Located in the charming village of Buccheri, in the province of Syracuse, the Parish of Sant’Ambrogio, also called the Mother Church, is a place of rare beauty and profound spirituality, containing some of the most valuable artistic treasures of the Sicilian Baroque period. Characterized by its fascinating unfinished façade, the interior of the church reveals to the visitor an artistic heritage of considerable value and suggestion.

The artistic heritage of the Mother Church
The parish holds within it numerous works of art of great value, dating from different historical periods and the result of the skillful hand of past masters. Prominent among them is a 16th-century wooden crucifix, an expression of Christ’s suffering humanity and a symbol of the mystery of Christian salvation.

Other notable works preserved in the church include a 17th-century painting of St. Michael, who stands out in his mighty figure as defender of the faith and protector of the Christian people. Next to this work is a mid-18th-century painting depicting St. Ambrose, the patron saint of the town, in his capacity as bishop, theologian and spiritual leader of the community.
