Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie

Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie

The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in the village of Anversa degli Abruzzi, dating from the 16th century, was declared a national monument in 1902. The portal, dated 1540, is adorned with a frame featuring exquisite limestone high-reliefs. The rose window dates from 1585 and bears the coat of arms of the Di Sangro family and the coat of arms of Anversa. The interior comprises three naves divided by cylindrical stone columns, with a rectangular apse housing a statue of Saint Roch from 1530 and a wooden tabernacle (by the master Picchi of Pescasseroli) in the style of a 16th-century small temple.

On the high altar stood the 16th-century Antwerp Triptych by an anonymous artist (belonging to the Florentine or Marche school according to some studies), stolen in 1981; a copy is now on display. It was originally located in the count’s chapel of St Michael the Archangel in the Norman castle of the same town. The triptych depicted the Coronation of the Virgin with Saints. This triptych is a tempera on panel of modest size with a gilded background and predominant colours of red and dark green.
